Tuna Melt Recipe (Air Fryer option)

This Tuna Melt Recipe, with an optional air fryer method, is a deliciously satisfying sandwich featuring a creamy tuna mixture, melted cheese, and crispy bread. The addition of pickled red onions and herbs elevates this classic comfort food, making it perfect for a quick lunch or dinner.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 can tuna drained
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon diced celery or onion, optional
  • 1 tablespoon pickled red onions chopped
  • 1 teaspoon minced dill
  • 1 teaspoon thinly sliced chives
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 slices Italian or sourdough bread
  • 2 slices cheese cheddar, Swiss, or your choice
  • Butter for spreading
  • 1 tomato sliced (Optional)

Instructions
 

  • In a bowl, mix the drained tuna, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, diced celery, pickled red onions, minced dill, thinly sliced chives, salt, and pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are combined.
  • Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread. Place one slice of bread butter-side down.
  • Add the tuna mixture, a slice of cheese, and optional tomato slices. Top with the second slice of bread, butter-side up.
  • Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for 3 minutes. Place the sandwich in the air fryer basket. Cook for 4-6 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the bread is golden and the cheese is melted.
  • Remove the sandwich from the air fryer and let it cool slightly. Slice the sandwich and serve warm with your favorite side.

Notes

You can use any type of cheese you prefer for the melt.
For a stove-top option, cook the sandwich in a skillet over medium heat for 3-4 minutes per side until golden brown.
Leftover tuna mixture can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
